2017 May Be a Job Seekers Market

2017 May Be a Job Seekers MarketAs an executive resume writer I could tell you that a well-written, compelling resume is the golden ticket to make all of your career dreams come true. But then I wouldnt be a very honest resume writer. Frankly, Im surprised how many job seekers are under the false assumption that if they just had the perfect resume theyd be able to have the luxury of choosing between job offers, employers would be banging down their door begging them to come work for them, and theyd make three times their current salary. Sure, there may be the occasional client that this happens to after uploading their resume to one job board or applying to only three jobs online. But the truth is that there are more factors at play in the success of your job search than JUST YOUR RESUME. And these kinds of resultsalthough a resume writers vision for all of their job-seeking clients is for their dreams to come trueare leid typical.Listen, your job search successthe amount of time it takes to find that great new role and how many responses you receive for interviewsdepends on what you DO with your resume. You cant upload it to Monster.com and apply to 10 jobs on Indeed.com and expect the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow to land in your lap. Is it a job seekers market? Yes. Will you have a shorter job search than in years past, with more options than five years ago? Probably. But you still have to put in the effort to JOB SEARCH.So, what does an effective job search look like?It looks like -Not depending on Monster, Indeed or insert job board name here to do the job for you. Job boards are a resource, but not the only one.-Realizing that a resume is a tool in your job search arsenal and not the end all, be all of your search.-Networking in earnest. Consistently. BEFORE you start actively job searchingand especially during your active job search.-Researching employers, finding the right culture fit, and then specifically targeting and reaching out to those em ployers as part of your job search.-Seeking out referrals. Employee referrals are the 1 way hiring managers are finding candidatesand they account for 48% of new hires according to a recent survey by LinkedIn.-Asking for and going to informational interviews to seek out the opinions and expertise of those whove walked the road before you. It opens doors.-Finding out what the hidden job market really is and how you can be accessing it. -Knowing where recruiters are searching and making sure you have a presence there, and that your online presence represents your brand and career accomplishments well. An effective and successful job search is a well-rounded one. Just like your investment portfolio shouldnt have all its eggs in one basket, neither should your job search. Do not leave the future of your career up to Monster, Indeed, a recruiter distribution, resume blast, or LinkedIn alone. Diversify your job search efforts. Be realistic. Educate yourself about job searching, interviewi ng, negotiating a salary, the hidden job market, and applicant tracking software. Do your research. Become a student of job searching and learn how to present yourself in todays job market. This is especially important if you havent searched in several years. Things change. Please dont be one of the many job seekers who believe a resume is the only thing you need to have a successful job search and land that next great role. Youll end up frustrated and disappointed. And probably blame your resume. As much as Id love for a professionally written resume to be the answer to make all of your career dreams come true, it just isnt the reality of job searchingand I want you to have a short job search One that results in more interviews than you can feasibly accept, with great companies youve always wanted to work for, who make you offers that you have a hard time choosing between. If you want that too, then you have to educate yourself on HOW to job search and then put in the time and effor t to search.I believe you deserve a career that brings you joy, fulfillment, and the ability to live your best life. If youre having a hard time writing your resume or your current resume isnt generating the response youd hoped it would, reach out to me on LinkedIn or visit my website for help now.

Why School Systems Still Feel Like Theyre Made for SAHMs

Why School Systems Still Feel Like Theyre Made for SAHMs Public, private, parochial, charter, alternative. For all the ways that schools throughout the country vary in funding, enrollment, and academic standards, one factor unites them all the school day timeframe.School day abflug times typically range between 7 and 9 a.m., with the last class ending anywhere from 2 to 4 p.m. No matter what your childrens exact schedules are, students spend an average of seven hours in school from bell to bell. And much to working parents frustration, ansicht school hours rarely if ever align with the standard office work day.Parents are then left scrambling to figure out how to coordinate their work and their childrens school schedules so that every responsibility is fulfilled and everyones needs are met. And that can be a tough pill to swallow. Here are just five ways that office hours and the school day conflict 1. Extracurriculars begin before working hours end.The timing of school-sponsored ex tracurriculars depends primarily on the age of the children involved elementary, middle, or high school and whether the activity is a practice or a mora summative event, such as a game or performance. While performances, especially those of older students, tend to occur later in the evening, practices and events for younger children are most likely to take distributions-mix shortly after the school day ends. Practices usually dont require parent involvement, but any performance that begins before you can clock out of the office puts parents in a tight spot. Sports games, music concerts, academic competitions, and all similar after-school events again, particularly for elementary and middle school students are usually scheduled soon after the final bell rings. Unless your job allows for flex-time or you can take off early, you probably end up arriving late to your childs performance or missing out altogether, much to your and and their disappointment.2. Meetings withteachersor adm inistrators are scheduled during working hours.Less frequent but more major school events that are generally district-wide, likeparent-teacher conferences, tend to be scheduled months in advance and take place in the evening, post-working hours. Meetings called by a teacher or administrator about a specific issue that has arisen with a child, on the other hand, happen more often, and are set during the school day.Your sons math teacher asks you to come in during his mid-morning planning period to discuss your sons slipping grade. The principal calls to schedule a 330 p.m. meeting regarding your daughters recent run of misbehavior. It makes sense why these gatherings would occur during or shortly before or after the school day. After all, teachers have many students and families to deal with, and many faculty and staff members are parents themselves who have obligations with their own children outside of school hours. However, parents who work the common 9-to-5 are stuck with profess ional commitments pitted against their childrens best interests and are pressured to make sacrifices in one area or the other.3. fruchtwein parent volunteer opportunities happen during school hours. As schools are driven to eliminate or disincentivize aide and paraprofessional positions, faculty and staff seek volunteers to assist with tasks throughout the building. From sorting mail into teachers boxes to supervising the rowdy lunch hour to lending a hand with classroom projects, volunteer opportunities abound. The most obvious candidates for these roles would be parents, since they have the most vested interest in the schools inner workings. Though many parents would like to be involved in some way to enhance their childs experience and the school overall, the bulk of opportunities to do so are available during school hours only. Unfortunately, parents whose jobs conflict with the school day timeframe are left with limited volunteer options or are completely out of the running.4.Bud get cuts in school services force increased parental engagement at home.In addition to the downsizing of lesser-trained positions, many schools have given the ax to specialized programs and their corresponding faculty, including art, music, and academic intervention, in order to stay within the limits of decreased budgets. By removing these programs from their curricula, schools pass to parents the onus of providing such opportunities for their students. We all know how rewarding music, art, and core subject beistand are, not to mention how enjoyable they are to children. Therefore, you can bet that parents and children alike will insist on finding alternative venues for trumpet tooting, portrait painting, and reading reinforcement. Whether through non-school organizations, private lessons, or home learning, parents become responsible for arranging special activities outside of school hours. And sadly you guessed it the traditional office work schedule restricts your availability t o facilitate these pursuits for your children.5.High premiums are being placed on before and after school care programs. With school days starting after office hours begin and/or ending before the work day is done, working parents must find child care options to cover the unaccounted for time. Many schools have come to meet this demand by offering before and after school programs in-house at a steep cost.It certainly seems like the most convenient option for children to remain in one location all day, but parents have to decide whether such ease is worth the price. While cheaper care options often are available, parents who choose the less expensive route face further complicated schedules as they try to organize multiple drop-off and pick-up times and places within their own work agendas. Which do you favor, financial peace or mental health? The message is clear the school and work days simply do not jive. Before you draft a petition for drastic changes, though, consider that the s chool day is not structured arbitrarily or solely to make your life harder. Logical, non-negotiable reasons beistand how schools configure their schedules, and it is time to acknowledge the reality that your work schedule must be the accommodating one in the relationship. In order to reconcile these two seemingly incompatible forces, rethink the way you work and make itworkfor you for your kids, for their school schedules, for your life as a whole. You cant change institutions, including school, but you can try to achieve career flexibility in order harmoniously integrate all your lifes pieces. I decided to step out of the traditional office setting in favor of a flexible schedule when my daughter entered the picture in order to fulfill the both roles of professional and mom.
